Learn about how Alzheimer's Disease and Korsakoff's Syndrome affect memory. another neurological disorder affecting memory is Korsakoff syndrome which

Korsakoff syndrome (KS) is an amnestic disorder caused by thiamine (vitamin B 1) deficiency typically associated with prolonged use of alcohol. The syndrome and psychosis are named after Sergei Korsakoff, the Russian neuropsychiatrist who discovered it during the late 19th century. Alcohol-related 'dementia' is a type of alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD). If a person has alcohol-related ‘dementia’ they will struggle with day-to-day tasks. This is because of the damage to their brain, caused by regularly drinking too much alcohol over many years.

The main alcohol dementia symptoms include memory loss. The Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome are two separate but related stages of the Elliott L. Mancall, in Neurology and General Medicine (Fourth Edition), 2008 Korsakoff's Syndrome. Korsakoff's syndrome, or psychosis, the chronic form of the Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome, is characterized primarily by an amnestic dementia, that is, a profound disorder of memory with relative preservation of cognitive abilities per se. Alcohol is linked to the development of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a brain disorder resulting from thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is actually a two-stage brain disorder in which Karsakoff syndrome (also known as Korsakoff psychosis) develops due to permanent brain damage as symptoms of Wernicke encephalopathy wane.

The patient conditions improved after High dosage Thiamine  Diagnosis is now much easier with MRI imaging. in such a case would be Wernicke's encephalopathy, Korsakoff syndrome and pontine myelinolysis. MRI  Patient was known for alcohol use disorders, and all previous MRI scans were considered as FDG-PET findings in the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Due to the close relationship between these two disorders, people with either are usually diagnosed with WKS as a single syndrome. It mainly causes vision changes, ataxia and impaired memory. The cause of the disorder is thiamine deficiency.
